A Multi objective inventory model for short food supply chains
2017
Over the past 50 years, vertically integrated multinationals dominated global food markets by providing huge product diversity at low prices. Such systems are characterized by long supply chains capable of achieving high cost efficiencies resulting from the use of cheap raw materials, high chemical inputs, industrial shelf-life extension processes, economies of scale and mechanization. This dominant position on the market, however, has been achieved at a heavy cost on the global environment, generated by massive food wastage, and by a steady supply of fossil fuels. For such reasons, global supply chains are considered unsustainable and new food systems are being promoted in order to replace…
Psihoemocionālie riski montāžas darbiniekam eksporta būvobjektos ārkārtas situācijas laikā
2022
Darba autors Emīls Beitiņš izstrādājis Bakalaura darbu par tēmu – “Psihoemocionālie riski montāžas darbiniekam eksporta būvobjektos ārkārtas situācijas laikā”. Darba kopējais apjoms 60 lpp, rezultāti apkopoti 7 tabulās, ievietoti 27 attēli. Darba izstrādāšanai izmantoti 25 literatūras avoti. Bakalaura darba mērķis ir apzināties pasākumu kopumu darba devējam, lai samazinātu psihoemocionālu stresu darbiniekam atrodoties ārvalstī ārkārtas situācijas laikā, kad nav zināma tuvākā iespēja atgriezties mājās pie ģimenes. Bakalaura darba uzdevums: Apzināties kādus pasākums uzņēmums varētu ieviest nākotnē, lai samazinātu darbinieku psiholoģisko stresu, kā arī apzināties cik lielu psiholoģisko stresu …
Correlates of the non-use of contraception among female university students in Italy
2021
The present paper scrutinizes the correlates of the non-use of contraception among young women in Italy. To this end we consulted two releases of Selfy (Sexual and Emotional LiFe of Youths) survey, which offer information for a nationally sample of university students. The results reveal that the likelihood of non-using contraception is higher among women living in the South and among those with previous experience of unsafe sexual behaviours. The risk of unprotected sex is also higher within a group of students who are relatively older than the others and live in a stable cohabiting union.
Pre-Frailty and Risk of Cardiovascular Disease in Elderly Men and Women The Pro.V.A. Study
2015
Background Frailty is an important risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD), but the impact of early, potentially reversible stages of frailty on CVD risk is unknown. Objectives This study sought to ascertain whether pre-frailty can predict the onset of CVD in a cohort of community-dwelling, not disabled, elderly people. Methods A sample of 1,567 participants age 65 to 96 years without frailty or disability at baseline was followed for 4.4 years. Pre-frailty was defined as the presence of 1 or 2 modified Fried criteria (unintentional weight loss, low physical activity level, weakness, exhaustion, and slow gait speed), and incident CVD as onset of coronary artery diseases, heart failure,…
FMEA - BASIC CONCEPT IN PRODUCT QUALITY
2018
Failure modes and effects analysis (FMEA) is a systematic procedure for analyzing a system (the entire system or just an assembly, subassembly or component) to identify potential failure modes, causes and effects of each failure on system operation. A somewhat different definition was formulated by Goddard Space Flight Center (USA) : FMEA is a procedure whereby every credible way of defeating each item from the lower decomposition level to the highest level is analyzed to determine effects on the system and classify each potential way of failure according to the severity of its effect.
Polymorphisms of an innate immune gene, toll-like receptor 4, and aggressive prostate cancer risk: a systematic review and meta-analysis.
2014
Background: Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) is one of the best known TLR members expressed on the surface of several leukocytes and tissue cells and has a key function in detecting pathogen and danger-associated molecular patterns. The role of TLR4 in the pathophysiology of several age-related diseases is also well recognized, such as prostate cancer (PCa). TLR4 polymorphisms have been related to PCa risk, but the relationship between TLR4 genotypes and aggressive PCa risk has not been evaluated by any systematic reviews. Methods: We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of candidate-gene and genome-wide association studies analyzing this relationship and included only white populatio…
Psychosocial Risks, Work Engagement, and Job Satisfaction of Nurses During COVID-19 Pandemic
2020
Context:COVID-19 pandemic is a serious health emergency that has affected countries all over the world. Health emergencies are a critical psychosocial risk factor for nurses. In general, psychosocial risks constitute serious problems as they impact workers' health, productivity, and efficiency. Despite their importance, few studies analyze nurses' psychosocial risks during a health emergency caused by a pandemic or analyze their perception of the emergency and its relation to such risks. Objectives:To analyze the perception of COVID-19 by nurses, especially about measures, resources, and impact on their daily work. Also, to analyze these professionals' psychosocial risks and the relationship…
Promoting active ageing through a physical exercise program aimed at reducing frailty and risk of falling among older adults
2017
Introduction: Risk of falling and frailty have been revealed as the most important conditions causing dependency among older people [1]. Older adults taking physical activity regularly can benefit of a proper maintenance of muscle strength and mass, which helps to retain function and independence, and to prevent falls and other injuries [2]. Concretely, the effectiveness of balance and strength training programs on the reduction of falls [3] and frailty [4] has been sufficiently proved.Theory/Methods: This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of an intervention based on a physical exercise program addressed at 65+ people suffering from risk of falling and frailty, and ultimately aimed…
Clinical utility of novel biomarkers for cardiovascular disease risk stratification
2012
Over the past few decades, a number of coronary artery disease (CAD) and cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors have been identified. The predictive power of "conventional" risk factors have been validated by observational, prospective and intervention studies. Nevertheless, all attempts to exactly predict the individual risk for CAD have failed, biased by a large number of incorrectly risk-classified subjects. To improve cardiovascular (CV) risk prediction, a large number of genetic and/or non-genetic biomarkers have been discovered and tested against the "classical" risk factors for their power to predict CV risk. Only few of them had a significant improvement over the predictive model…
Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma, Body Mass Index, and Cytokine Polymorphisms: A Pooled Analysis from the InterLymph Consortium.
2015
Abstract Background: Excess adiposity has been associated with lymphomagenesis, possibly mediated by increased cytokine production causing a chronic inflammatory state. The relationship between obesity, cytokine polymorphisms, and selected mature B-cell neoplasms is reported. Method: Data on 4,979 cases and 4,752 controls from nine American/European studies from the InterLymph consortium (1988–2008) were pooled. For diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), follicular lymphoma (FL), and chronic lymphocytic leukemia/small lymphocytic lymphoma (CLL/SLL), joint associations of body mass index (from self-reported height and weight) and 12 polymorphisms in cytokines IL1A (rs1800587), IL1B (rs16944,…
